A survey was sent to local small businesses recently, seeking insight into how the Surprise Economic Development team can continue to provide a valuable level of service to the small business community as we update programming and relocate the City’s business incubator, the AZ TechCelerator. The AZ TechCelerator is currently located on Bell Road near El Mirage Road, but will be moving to a new City Center location in 2025. The City will use the survey data collected from 140 participating businesses and two focus groups to better tailor small business support to our community’s current needs in conjunction with the move. Key Findings: • City Resources: City services, including the website, were highly valued. • Networking Power: Local groups and online forums proved crucial for many businesses. • Top Priorities: Assistance with marketing strategies, startup fundamentals and financial resources was identified as essential. • Customized Support: Tailored one-on-one assistance is desired most. • Time is of the Essence: Many businesses emphasized the importance of timely support. Cooking Oil Disposal There are a lot of choices for cooking your holiday meals, from deep-fried to oven-roasted and from smoked to store-bought. However, when it comes to cleaning up after the feasts, there is one rule you need to remember... don’t put fat, oil and grease down your drain! To learn more about recycling, visit surpriseaz.gov/Recycle 14 surpriseaz.gov | FALL 2024 EXPANDING TRASH & RECYCLING SERVICES New Pilot Program Offers Monthly Household Hazardous Waste Pickups Surprise is rolling out a new Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection pilot program, allowing residents to schedule collections monthly rather than just three times a year. The pilot program, which began in September, will run through November 2024 and offers two types of HHW collection. One pick-up will occur for electronic HHW, including TVs, computers and cell phones. Another will occur for all other HHW, including pool chemicals, pesticides and solvents. Crews will schedule up to 50 collections for just electronic HHW materials per month and 160 collections per month for other HHW collections. Residents can request an appointment for collections during this three-month pilot period by calling customer service at 623.222.1920. All scheduling is based on availability and is first come, first served. FALL 2024 | surpriseaz.gov 15US 60 (Grand Avenue) CORRIDOR STUDY Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is currently conducting a corridor study of US 60/Grand Avenue from Loop 303 to State Route 74 in partnership with the City of Surprise, City of Peoria, Maricopa County Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Transportation. THE PURPOSE » Conduct a comprehensive assessment of current and future travel demands within the study area. » Identify a series of transportation investments that will accommodate the future traffic demand along the US 60 corridor. » Identify transportation infrastructure improvements, not only to address existing travel needs, but also support anticipated development in the surrounding area through 2050. » Develop a realistic future network for the study area through rigorous modeling, community outreach and identification of key arterial street corridors. THE AREA The study area is generally bounded by Loop 303 to the east, SR 74 to the north, Sun Valley Parkway to the south and Turner Parkway to the west. A proposed BNSF Railway facility is included in the study area and analysis. THE PROCESS The study has already begun and is expected to conclude in July 2025. It will consist of a series of steps shown below: PUBLIC OUTREACH MAG held the first public open house in August in Surprise. Thank you to everyone who came out and shared their input on existing conditions and potential solutions. Two more community outreach meetings will be held at defined stages of the process. PROPOSITION 479 ON NOVEMBER BALLOT A number of improvements to arterial streets, Loop 303, and US 60 within the study area have been identified as part of the MAG Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan. The plan serves as the basis for the transportation investments funded through Proposition 479. Proposition 479 is the continuation of an existing, dedicated half- cent sales tax in Maricopa County to fund transportation that has been in place since 1985. Proposition 479 will be on the ballot this November. IMPROVEMENTS TO LOOP 303 / US 60 ADOT started the second phase of the interim improvements in the Loop 303 and US 60 (Grand Avenue) corridor at the end of July, which is expected to take approximately six months to complete.
