Shape Surprise S H O P S U R P R I S E14 surpriseaz.gov | Fall 2021 RIDECHOICE TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM CRITICAL HOME REHABILITATION FUNDS The city is accepting applications from income- eligible, owner-occupied property owners in Surprise in need of assistance for critical home repairs to ensure the home is healthy and safe to occupy. These programs may also be available to income-eligible homeowners with disabilities and/or seniors who need modifications to their residence to improve accessibility and safety. Through federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, there are two funding programs. Both have the same eligibility require- ments and application, but cannot be combined. RIDECHOICE OFFERS Wheelchair-accessible vehicle providers and the rideshare service Uber. The ability to book and receive service Valleywide is available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Valley Metro’s RideChoice program, which offers discounted transportation options, has been expanded to include all veterans with proof of eligibility, and the FY2021 Income Limit Category has been changed to Low (80%) Income Limits – this is up from Very Low (50%). Persons age 65 and over and people with disabilities automatically qualify. This expansion is a result of the city’s adoption of the Veterans, Disability & Human Services Commission Strategic Plan. D I S PO S A LMARCH 2020 PUBLIC WORKS OPERATIONS FACILITY This facility at Cactus and Litchfield roads consolidated and centralized the city’s fleet operations (including support of public safety vehicles, equipment, and apparatus), solid waste management, street operations, and traffic sign and signal operations. JANUARY 2021 FIRE STATION 304 Located in the city’s growing northern area at 24550 N. 163rd Ave. this 18,000 sq. ft. station has multiple bays to accommodate an engine, ladder company, ambulance and a battalion chief. It replaced a temporary, modu- lar fire station. JULY 2021 PAVEMENT PRESERVATION The Bond provided pavement preservation catch up funds to support the city’s existing annual pavement preservation budget. One of the biggest proj- ects paved 15 lane miles on Bell Rd. from 134th Ave. to the eastern city limits. G.O. BOND CONSTRUCTION projects reach or the past four years, the city has been working to complete the G.O. Bond projects voters approved in November 2017. This November, all nine of the construction projects will be complete – with only a land purchase remaining for a future fire / police station and neighborhood park. It also added a traffic signal at the intersection of Northwest Ranch Pkwy. It was substantially complete at the end of July, with some landscape and other final items complete in September. FIRE STATION 308 Located at the southeast corner of Litchfield and Cactus roads, this multi- bay facility was built to include an Engine Company, Hazardous Materials Response Team and future ambulance. NOVEMBER 2021 PUBLIC SAFETY EVIDENCE & READINESS CENTER Located at 134th and Foxfire drives, the center will house public safety equipment and police property and evidence storage. POLICE TRAINING FACILITY Located at 134th and Foxfire drives, the facility will provide training space, including defensive tactics and firearms simulation rooms. LITCHFIELD ROAD IMPROVEMENTS There are now four travel lanes on the stretch of Litchfield Rd. from Waddell Rd. to Peoria Ave. and a new traffic signal at Litchfield Rd. and Sweetwater Ave. In addition to adding two travel lanes, the project provided sidewalks, a bicycle lane, street lighting and landscaping. AUGUST 2020 WADDELL ROAD IMPROVEMENTS Waddell Rd. from the east limit of Loop 303 to Reems Rd. has been widened, and a traffic signal has been added at the intersection of Sarival Ave. The project constructed four additional travel lanes in the area (except Reems to Sarival, which required three additional lanes) for a total of six travel lanes.
